New to Pilates ... here's what you need to know

Do I need to be fit - strong - or flexible to start Pilates?

Not at all — you’re welcome just as you are. Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise, and most of our classes are suitable for beginners, provided you do not have major injuries, have not recently undergone surgery, and are not more than 16 weeks pregnant.  We do spend some time lying, sitting or kneeling on the mat, so it’s helpful if you’re able to get down to — and back up from — the floor on your own.

If you’re unsure about whether a class is right for you or have questions about your fitness, please do get in touch (hello@luminapilatesuk.com). We’re always happy to discuss your individual needs and help you find the best class for you

What if I've never done Pilates before ?

New to Pilates? Our 4 week Introduction to Pilates Course is the perfect place to start! You’ll learn the core Pilates Principles and apply them to beginner-friendly exercises. Classes are small and supportive, so there’s plenty of chance for individual guidance as you build confidence and get moving.   More details to follow ....

What should I wear ?

Wear something that is comfortable and you can move freely in - leggings and a light top are ideal. We also recommend Grip socks and always have a selection to purchase if needed.

Do I need to bring a mat ?

We encourage you to bring your own mat if you have one, but don’t worry if you don’t — we always have spare mats available. If you’re new to Pilates, you might find it helpful to try a few classes first before deciding to get your own

How often should I come to classes ?

1–2 sessions a week is ideal. Twice a week usually brings faster progress, but even once a week will make a difference. As Joseph Pilates said, “After ten sessions, you will feel the difference; after twenty, you will see the difference; and after thirty, you will have a new body.” â€‹

What are the benefits of Pilates ?

Pilates can help you feel stronger, more flexible, and more comfortable in your body. With regular practice, it can improve posture, balance, coordination, and ease everyday stiffness. It can also help you feel more relaxed and confident. The more consistently you practice, the more you’ll notice the difference
